Your library card is your all access pass to a massive online collection available anytime and anywhere. Whether you want to stream a movie on your tablet, download an audiobook for your commute, or check out a new ebook from the couch, our digital branch is always open and completely free!

Digital Library

Hoopla is a free digital media service offered by your public library that allows you to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics, and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone – and even your TV!

  • No Waiting, Ever: Titles can be streamed immediately or downloaded for offline enjoyment later.
  • Borrowing Limits: Cardholders can borrow up to five items per month.
  • Lending Periods: Lending periods can be up to 21 days, depending on the title.

Libraries across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand offer Hoopla. If your library doesn’t yet, let them know you’d like it!

How to Get Started

Follow these instructions to set up the Hoopla app on your TV or mobile device.

  1. Download the App: Visit your device’s app store (Google Play, Apple App Store, etc.) and download the Hoopla Digital app.
  2. Create an Account: Open the app and sign up for an account using your email address. You will be prompted to find your library and enter your library card number.
  3. Link Your TV (Optional): To use Hoopla on a smart TV, open the app’s Settings and select “Link TV Device.” You will be given a 4-digit code. Visit hoopladigital.com/link on a computer or phone, enter the code, and your TV will be synced.
  4. Browse and Borrow: You can now browse a huge collection of digital titles. Simply click “Borrow” on any item you’d like to check out. The item will be available immediately on all your devices.

Stream Great Films for Free with Kanopy!

The Belleville Area District Library is excited to offer you Kanopy, a free video streaming service that provides instant access to thousands of critically-acclaimed movies, insightful documentaries, award-winning foreign films, and classic cinema.
Often called “thoughtful entertainment,” Kanopy’s collection is perfect for viewers who are seeking something more. With your BADL card, you can explore a diverse and inspiring world of film, all from the comfort of your home.

How Kanopy Works

Your BADL card gives you a monthly budget of [X] play credits.
1 Credit = 1 Film: Each time you press play on a film, you use one credit.
Viewing Period: Once you start a film, you have 3 days to watch it as many times as you like without using another credit.
Credits Reset Monthly: Your play credits will reset back to [X] on the first day of each month.

Unlimited Viewing for Kids!

Kanopy also includes Kanopy Kids, a special collection of films and TV series just for children. With engaging and educational content, it’s quality screen time you can feel good about.
Best of all, everything in the Kanopy Kids section is credit-free! You can watch as much as you want, anytime.


Get Started in 3 Easy Steps

Go to our Kanopy Portal Visit kanopy.com/en/belleville and click the “Add Library Card” button.
Enter Your Library Card Enter your 14-digit Belleville Area District Library card number and PIN. You will then be prompted to create an account with your email address and a password.
Start Watching! You’re all set! Browse the collection and start streaming on your favorite device.

Search MeLCat

Borrow From Across Michigan with Your BADL Card!

Ever wish the library had a specific book, movie, or CD that you couldn’t find on our shelves? With the Michigan eLibrary Catalog (MeLCat), now you can get it!
As a Belleville Area District Library cardholder, you have access to MeLCat, a free statewide service that connects you to the collections of hundreds of other Michigan libraries. Think of it as one giant library catalog for the entire state, with millions of items available just for you.

How to Borrow Through MeLCat

Requesting items from other libraries is easy and completely free.
Search for an Item Visit the MeLCat website to search for the title you want.
Request It with Your BADL Card When you find your item, click the “Get this from MeLCat!” button. When prompted, select “Belleville Area District Library” as your home library and enter your BADL card number and PIN.
Pick It Up Here The item will be delivered right here to the Belleville Area District Library for you to pick up. We will notify you by phone or email as soon as it arrives!


In a Hurry? Ask About “Visiting Patron”

The MeLCat system includes an optional “Visiting Patron” service that allows you to use your BADL card to check out materials in person at other participating libraries. It’s perfect for when you need an item right away and don’t want to wait for delivery.

Eligibility: You must have a valid Belleville Area District Library card in good standing to use MeLCat.
Responsibility: You are responsible for any items you borrow, just as you are with our own materials. Fees for lost or damaged items from other libraries will be charged to your account.

With Libby, you can enjoy free ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines from your library. All you need is a library card. BADL cardholders can borrow up to six items at a time for a lending period of up to 21 days.

Step-by-Step Guide


Step 1: Download the App

First, download or open Libby on your device.
iOS (iPhone/iPad): Download from the Apple App Store
Android: Download from Google Play
Amazon Fire tablets: Download from the Amazon Appstore
Windows, Mac, & Chromebooks: Use your browser at libbyapp.com
Note: For the best experience on a computer, use an up-to-date version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge.

Step 2: Find Your Library & Sign In

Once the app is open, follow the prompts to find your local library. You will then be asked to sign in with your library card number and PIN.

Step 3: Find Something to Borrow

Browse your library’s collection and find your next great read.
Tap the Search icon to find a specific title, author, or series.
Tap the Library icon to browse your library’s catalog. You’ll find helpful filters, curated lists, and special collections created by your librarians.
Tip: Not ready to read a title, but want to remember it for later? Tap the Tag button to add it to a custom list.

Step 4: Manage Your Books on Your Shelf

Your borrowed items and magazines appear on your Shelf. All book and audiobook loans are automatically downloaded for offline use when you have a Wi-Fi connection.
From your Shelf, you can:
Tap Loans to read or listen to your borrowed titles.
Tap Holds to see your place in line and manage your holds.
Tap Notices to see in-app notifications for your loans and holds.
Tap any magazine on your Magazine Rack to start reading instantly.
