Library of Things: Frequently Asked Questions

Who can borrow from the Library of Things?

You must be 18 years or older.
You must have a valid library card in your own name.
The cardholder must be present at checkout. You cannot send a friend or family member to pick up an item for you.

Can I place items on hold?

Yes! You can place Library of Things items on hold through our catalog just like a regular book.

How long can I keep the items?

Most Library of Things items check out for 2 weeks.
Renewals depend on the item. High-demand collections, like cookware and hotspots, cannot be renewed.

How many things can I check out at once?

Limits vary based on the type of collection.
For example, you can borrow up to three cookware items at a time so you can bake and decorate together, but you may only check out one hotspot at a time.

How do I return my items?

Please return all Library of Things items directly to a staff member at the circulation desk.
Do not place these items in the book drop. They are often fragile or bulky and can be easily damaged by heavy books.
Please return items clean and ready for the next person. Items returned dirty, such as cookware, may be subject to a $5 cleaning fee.

Can I check the same item out again right away?

To make sure everyone in the community gets a chance to explore the collection, you must wait 24 hours after returning an item before you can check it out again.

What happens if a piece is missing?

Many of our kits come with multiple pieces. If a single part is lost, like a charging cord, a small fee will be added to your account to replace that specific piece.

Are there safety guidelines?

Yes. You must use all items in compliance with the manufacturer instructions and library policies.
Users may not alter or modify the items. The library is not responsible for any damage or injury caused while using an item.
If you have concerns about the safety or condition of an item, please stop using it and notify the library immediately.
